Volunteers needed for winter tree planting

North Lincolnshire Council is inviting volunteers to assist in planting 65,000 trees over the coming winter months. The initiative is part of the council's ambitious plan to reach a total of 250,000 trees in the area.

Councillor David Rose highlighted the importance of the effort, saying residents have an opportunity to contribute to a lasting community achievement.

A council spokesperson explained that the winter planting program aims to establish new woodlands, create wildlife corridors, and provide natural windbreaks and shelter across the region.

Council leader Rob Waltham emphasized the significance of the goal: "We have set a challenging target of 250,000 trees, recognizing the lasting benefits this will bring to our communities."

The council is asking for support from residents, volunteers, schools, and landowners. Contributions can include volunteering for a planting day, offering land for new trees, or helping maintain recently planted areas.

Waltham noted that over 185,000 trees have already been planted, enhancing parks, school grounds, open spaces, hedgerows, and private gardens throughout North Lincolnshire.

The councils teams will be active across the region in partnership with Humber Forest, the Woodland Trust, and the Forestry Commission over the next few weeks.

Rose added, "Every new tree improves the environment in North Lincolnshire, making it greener and healthier, and the positive changes are already visible."

The first major winter planting site will be at York Road in Brigg, marking the start of the seasons efforts to expand the local tree network.
