Tragedy strikes in Goa, India as 23 lose their lives in nightclub fire

At least 23 individuals have lost their lives in a devastating fire at a well-known nightclub in Goa, India, authorities report. Most of the victims appear to be club staff, though some tourists were also among the deceased.

Officials suspect the blaze was triggered by a gas cylinder explosion in the clubs kitchen around midnight on Saturday. The fire quickly engulfed the venue, according to local reports.

Goa's Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, described the tragedy, saying, "Today is an extremely sorrowful day for the people of Goa."

Shri Alok Kumar, Goas Director General of Police, explained, "The fire primarily affected the kitchen area on the ground floor. It started around midnight but has now been brought under control." He added that the concentration of bodies near the kitchen suggests that most of the victims were employees of the club.

The incident occurred at Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub located in Baga, one of Goas busiest coastal regions. Rescue operations continued into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Dr. Sawant noted that three people succumbed to burn injuries while others died from asphyxiation. He also mentioned that "three to four" tourists were among the victims, though their ages and nationalities have not yet been confirmed.

An official investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the fire. Dr. Sawant emphasized, "Those responsible will face the strictest legal action. Any negligence will be addressed firmly." He expressed his condolences to the families affected, stating, "I am deeply grieved and extend my heartfelt sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones."

Goa, a former Portuguese colony along the Arabian Sea, is famous for its vibrant nightlife, sandy beaches, and resorts, attracting millions of visitors each year.
