Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted, without presenting any proof, that Russian troops have seized control of Pokrovsk and Vovchansk, two Ukrainian cities experiencing heavy combat in the countrys eastern region. The announcement came on the eve of his meeting with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow, aimed at discussing a potential peace agreement for Ukraine. Observers suggest the statements were intended to strengthen Russia's negotiating position, signaling progress and minimizing the need for concessions.
Ukraines military, however, refuted Putins claims, with soldiers stationed on the frontlines telling ABC News that the reports were false. Historically, both Putin and the Russian military have made premature and inaccurate claims of capturing Ukrainian territories.
Ukrainian Defense Holds Strong in Pokrovsk
According to the Ukrainian 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces, Ukrainian units are continuing to resist Russian advances in Pokrovsk. Russia has been attempting to capture this strategically important defensive hub for over a year and a half, incurring heavy losses. Despite recent gains, independent military analysts and Ukrainian troops confirm that the city remains partially under Ukrainian control, though much of it has been devastated by fighting.

Ongoing Battles in Vovchansk
Vovchansk, located in Ukraines Kharkiv region near the Russian border, has also been a focal point of prolonged conflict. Russian forces have struggled to secure the city fully, while Ukrainian troops maintain positions in its southern areas. Viktor Tregubov, Head of Communications for the Ukrainian Joint Forces, told ABC News that although the city is heavily damaged, it has not been captured, with most of the ruins currently under Russian control.

Previous Russian Claims and Ongoing Contests
Putin has also claimed, without verification, that Kupiansk has fallen to Russian forces. Ukrainian authorities, however, report that they are close to reclaiming the area. The Russian Ministry of Defense posted a video on Telegram showing a soldier raising a Russian flag in Pokrovsk, a tactic Russia has used multiple times despite the city remaining contested.
