Palestinian-American teen Mohammed Ibrahim has been freed from Israeli detention after spending more than nine months in custody, according to a report by The Guardian on Thursday. Ibrahim, who was visiting the West Bank from Florida, was taken into custody in February for allegedly throwing stones at Israeli vehicles. He remained at the Ofer military prison until his release, reportedly after entering a guilty plea.
Upon his return to the United States, Ibrahim's family expressed profound relief. His uncle described the period of waiting for his release as horrific. During his imprisonment, Ibrahim reportedly experienced significant weight loss and developed a skin infection, requiring hospitalization soon after arriving back in Florida.
His release followed persistent advocacy from family members and supporters. More than 100 human rights, civil rights, and faith-based groups petitioned US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his freedom. In October, 27 Democratic members of Congress also urged Rubio to intensify efforts to bring the teen home. Earlier, in September, the US Department of State appointed a dedicated official to handle Ibrahims case due to his American citizenship. A spokesperson for the department noted that consular support is provided whenever a US citizen is detained abroad.
