Netanyahu advocates for a 'buffer zone' without military presence in Syria

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he anticipates Syria will establish a "demilitarized zone" extending from Damascus to the Golan Heights, a region currently annexed by Israel. His comments came during a video address while visiting soldiers hospitalized after recent operations in Syria.

Following the ousting of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad last year, Israel positioned troops in the UN-monitored buffer area separating the Golan Heights from Syrian-controlled territories, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.

Netanyahu emphasized that the Israeli military will continue its presence in this zone to "guarantee the security of Israeli citizens." The proposed demilitarized area stretches approximately 50 kilometers from Damascus.

After the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel has prioritized preventing cross-border assaults and stopping hostile groups from establishing positions near its borders. Netanyahu also highlighted the goal of safeguarding Syria's Druze community, which Israel considers a strategic ally.

The Israeli military maintains regular strikes on Syrian targets aimed at neutralizing weapons stockpiles and military assets.
