Merz advocates for advancement in Middle East peace process during visit to Jordan

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need to erode the societal backing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas while welcoming the sustained ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after discussions with King Abdullah in the Jordanian city of Aqaba.

Merz noted that the lull in hostilities had held for more than two months and stressed that the next stage should now begin, which in his view requires eliminating the foundations that enable Hamas to operate. He highlighted Jordans constructive contribution to regional stability during a challenging period and pointed to strong cooperation with Germany on security matters.

The chancellor underlined that conditions for civilians in Gaza must improve swiftly and tangibly, pointing to the urgent need for additional humanitarian supplies ahead of the winter months. He also said Berlin remained attentive to developments in the West Bank and insisted that prospects for a future Palestinian state must remain intact, ruling out any moves toward annexation in the territory. He referenced the stance of US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly stated that the West Bank should not be integrated into Israel.

Afterward, Merz traveled to Jerusalem, where President Isaac Herzog received him. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday.

Merz stated that Germany seeks to contribute to building a foundation for a renewed regional framework that allows Israelis, Palestinians and neighboring Arab states to coexist in peace, liberty and security over the long term. He reaffirmed Germanys support for a two state solution and urged the prompt resumption of negotiations, adding that this would be a topic in his talks with Netanyahu.
