The Israeli office reported that the materials were delivered to the Israeli military in Gaza and were received under the supervision of a military rabbi. They were scheduled to be transported to an Israeli forensic facility for examination.
The statement emphasized that the Israeli authorities remain in constant communication with the families of the two deceased hostages, including a Thai citizen abducted during the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023. Efforts to return the remains will continue until the final ones are handed over.
Israel and Hamas had agreed on the body transfer as part of a ceasefire arrangement in October, which stipulates that Israel will return the remains of 15 deceased Gazans for each Israeli body recovered. As part of the same deal, Hamas released the 20 surviving hostages on October 13 in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. However, the process of returning the deceased has been slow, taking more than seven weeks.
