Salvador Nasralla, the centrist figure in Hondurass presidential race, has publicly claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump interfered in the election, amid reports of irregularities in the vote counting process. Last week, Trump expressed support for conservative candidate Nasry Asfura, 67, while labeling Nasralla, 72, as a borderline communist, actions Nasralla argues may have affected his chances of winning.
It was damaging because I was ahead by a significant margin, Nasralla told Reuters in an exclusive interview on Thursday.
Trumps involvement has overshadowed the tightly contested election for the Central American nations next leader. The U.S. president suggested, without presenting evidence, that the peaceful Sunday election might have been fraudulent after early results indicated a technical tie between Nasralla and Asfura.
Looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential Election, Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday. If they do, there will be hell to pay!
Previously, Trump had warned of potential cuts in U.S. aid to Honduras if Asfura did not win and reiterated that any tampering with results would have serious consequences. In an unusual move, he also announced a pardon for former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who faced a drug trafficking conviction in the U.S., just days before the vote.
By Thursday evening, Honduran election authorities reported that 87 percent of ballots had been counted, with 17 percent flagged for inconsistencies and under review. Final results are expected by December 30, according to Reuters.
Current polls show Asfura slightly ahead, capturing 40.27 percent compared to Nasrallas 39.38 percent. Experts, however, warn that the final outcome remains uncertain. Nasralla has also raised concerns about potential irregularities during the primary elections and alleged vote manipulation this week through posts on X, though these claims have not been independently confirmed.
