Crowds gathered early on Sunday to welcome the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless back to Portsmouth naval base in Hampshire, arriving around 08:45 GMT. Later in the day, the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, carrying 1,600 personnel, is expected to dock at 13:15.
Thousands of families are anticipated to line the quayside for what is being described as the largest naval homecoming in two decades. Over 4,000 British service members participated in Operation Highmast, visiting countries such as Singapore, Australia, and Japan during the eight-month mission.
The operation aimed to strengthen the United Kingdoms defense partnerships, support economic growth, enhance national security, and demonstrate the countrys global influence.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey commented: The safe return of our Carrier Strike Group marks the successful completion of one of the UKs most significant deployments in recent years. This mission highlights our commitment to the Armed Forces, collaboration with international partners, and boosting economic prosperity while maintaining Britains global security role.
He added he was immensely proud of everyone involved and expressed his happiness that personnel would reunite with their families in time for Christmas and enjoy a well-deserved break.
Carrier Strike Group Commander James Blackmore said: Leading nearly 4,000 sailors, soldiers, aviators, and marines over 40,000 nautical miles, working alongside more than 30 nations, has been an extraordinary honor.
