German president calls for European 'self-assurance' during UK state visit

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its global standing at a City of London banquet on Thursday, concluding the second day of his UK state visit. Speaking at the historic Guildhall in Londons financial district, he encouraged Europe to embrace the innovative spirit seen in the Square Mile as a way to counter pessimistic views of the continent.

"Europeans will only remain strong if we redefine our position and find renewed self-confidence," Steinmeier said, accompanied by his wife, Elke Budenbender, addressing a gathering of business leaders and dignitaries.

Praising Europes resources, talent, infrastructure, and legal framework, he highlighted the importance of advancing in the digital economy and regaining confidence. He noted that the City of London could serve as an example in this effort.

Steinmeier, whose role is mainly ceremonial, is on a three-day state visit, the first by a German president to the UK in 27 years. As Germanys foreign minister during the 2016 Brexit referendum and a critic of the decision to leave the EU, he has welcomed the improving ties between London and European capitals.

Earlier in the day, he visited parliament and the Victoria and Albert Museums East London site, stressing the importance of moving forward after Brexit. Drawing on a cultural reference, he compared post-Brexit reconciliation to the reunion of the Oasis brothers, urging both sides to leave disappointment behind.

"As one of Oasis's famous songs says, dont look back in anger," he told MPs, noting the brothers reunion and sold-out tour as a symbol of renewed unity. "Our relations may have changed, but our commitment and friendship remain. Let us focus on the future together."

Steinmeier also praised the Kensington Treaty signed between Germany and the UK in July, which strengthened security and defense cooperation, along with the first EU-UK summit since Brexit in May aimed at reducing trade barriers. He mentioned ongoing projects, including a German-British electricity interconnector planned for 2028 and initiatives to facilitate youth mobility for students.

The renewed emphasis on UK-European collaboration follows Russias invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, triggering Europes largest land conflict since World War II. Steinmeiers visit comes after King Charles IIIs visit to Germany in March 2023, his first overseas trip as monarch.

On Wednesday, King Charles hosted Steinmeier at Windsor Castle, celebrating the enduring relationship between the two nations. The state visit will conclude in Coventry on Friday, where British and German air force personnel will take part in a remembrance ceremony for the citys wartime devastation.
