A local waste collection crew received widespread praise for their prompt actions in aiding an elderly woman who sustained a serious head injury. The incident occurred in Eyke, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, when the woman fell onto the road outside her home in November.
Stephen Cane, the HGV driver and loader, explained that the team responded immediately, providing first aid until paramedics arrived. Cassandra Clements, managing director of East Suffolk Services, which manages the waste collection, described the crew's response as "heroic" and said she felt "extremely proud" of their actions.
The crew, including Mr. Cane and refuse loaders Aaron Braybrook and Robert Willis, acted quickly to ensure the woman's safety. They positioned their bin lorry to shield her from traffic. When they learned that an ambulance could take up to four hours to arrive, they located her home, contacted a neighbor, and made sure she was moved to a safe location.
"The lady needed help, and we were ready to do whatever was necessary to ensure her safety and care," Mr. Cane said. "Anyone in our situation would hope to act the same way."
Ms. Clements praised the crews "professionalism, quick-thinking, and compassion," noting that it underscores the essential role waste workers play in supporting communities daily.
A witness that day also wrote to East Suffolk Services, describing the team as a "shining example of the positive impact public service workers can have in their communities."
