On Friday, French authorities captured one of two inmates who had fled a Dijon prison a day earlier using bed sheets to climb out after cutting through their cell bars, according to a prosecutor.
The arrested man was found south of Dijon, the location of the breakout, stated Olivier Caracotch, the prosecutor for the eastern city. He is believed to be the older of the two escapees, a 32-year-old facing charges of domestic violence. The second escapee, a 19-year-old suspected of attempted murder, remains at large.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised the police in a post on X, noting they had successfully apprehended "one of the two individuals who escaped yesterday from the Dijon detention centre."
Prison guards discovered the escape early Thursday morning. Authorities said the 32-year-old had left a note in his cell expressing frustration at being detained "for too long." The duration of his imprisonment was not immediately specified.
French prisons face severe overcrowding, among the worst in Europe, with staff unions criticizing the state for prioritizing new supermax facilities for drug offenders while neglecting ordinary jails. Dijon prison, built in 1853, currently houses 311 inmates despite having only 180 spaces, according to the justice ministry.
This escape follows a recent high-profile heist at the Louvre museum in Paris, where thieves stole valuable imperial jewels in broad daylight. Investigations into that theft continue, with several individuals already arrested and charged.
