A violent incident occurred in northern Iraq's Erbil governorate, where a group of armed individuals targeted fuel tanker trucks, resulting in at least one death and multiple injuries, according to Kurdish officials. The attack took place just days after rockets struck the Khor Mor gas field in the region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Interior stated, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency, that the shootings are connected to the earlier assault on the gas field. The rocket strike had damaged a storage tank at Khor Mor, one of the largest gas facilities in the area, causing a halt in production and widespread electricity outages.
Following the Khor Mor attack, the KRG dispatched liquid fuel to maintain power supply. However, the ministry reported that "a group of rioters blocked the route used by fuel tankers and civilians in Gwer, opening fire on travelers." The ministry confirmed that this confrontation led to the death of one individual and injuries to several others, and vowed to take strict action against those responsible, calling it "an act of sabotage."
Earlier reports from the Iraqi News Agency noted armed clashes between the Harkiya tribe and security forces near Lajan village on the Erbil-Gwer road. These clashes, adjacent to the Lanaz Company refinery, reportedly caused casualties.
Operations at Khor Mor gas field have resumed, with gas transmission to power stations restarting at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday (23:00 GMT Saturday), according to the KRG electricity ministry.
On Thursday, Dana Gas, the joint field operator, confirmed that a rocket strike had hit a storage tank, causing production stoppages and major power outages. Responsibility for the attack remains unknown, and authorities have not identified the perpetrators. This incident represents the most severe attack since a series of drone strikes in July that reduced production by roughly 150,000 barrels per day.
Military analyst Abdulkhaliq Talaat suggested that the drone attack on Khor Mor may have originated from territory controlled by Iraqi forces. The damaged storage tank is part of newer facilities partially funded by the United States and constructed by a US contractor, according to an industry source. The KRG maintains a level of autonomy in northern Iraq, where American companies hold significant energy investments.
