E-bike ambulance fleet deployed for half marathon

This weekend, an independent ambulance provider will introduce its first fully equipped e-bike ambulance fleet. Acute Ambulance & Medical Services Ltd (AAMS), based in Milton Keynes, will deploy the bikes during the city's Winter Half Marathon on Sunday.

The company stated this marks the inaugural use of fully outfitted emergency e-bikes at a UK sports event. Director Kieren Gibson explained that the bikes are intended for "rapid response to critical incidents such as cardiac arrests, greatly improving patient survival chances."

"Large events like the MK Winter Half Marathon demand fast and adaptable medical support. These e-bikes enable our team to reach patients more quickly, safely, and sustainably than traditional methods," he added.

Each e-bike is stocked with a comprehensive range of medical tools, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and bleeding control kits. The compact design allows the bikes to maneuver through crowded routes and narrow spaces that standard ambulances or motorcycles cannot easily access.

The e-bikes allow medical personnel to provide immediate care to runners facing exhaustion, dehydration, injuries, or sudden medical issues. Every bike is equipped with:

  • Full first-aid and trauma kits
  • Automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Airway management equipment
  • Bleeding control kits
  • Communication radios
  • High-visibility safety lighting

Using the e-bikes at the marathon highlights AAMSs commitment to innovative and eco-friendly patient care. Mr. Gibson remarked, "We are redefining responsive, safe, and environmentally conscious medical support at events."
