Council informed that construction of town's new arena will amount to approximately £50m

The local council has revealed that a new 3,500-seat arena, aimed at boosting activity in the town centre, would require an investment of around 50 million. Officials cautioned that similar venues in other cities have not always proven successful.

Basildon Borough Council has suggested the venue could replace the current Towngate Theatre, which the council acquired for roughly 20 million in May 2024. Earlier, council leader Gavin Callaghan highlighted that the arena could attract significant numbers of visitors by hosting live music, theatre, and esports events.

Political parties, including Reform UK and the Conservatives, have expressed skepticism over the arenas potential success and the financial implications of the project.

During a recent regeneration and economic development scrutiny meeting, councillors and officers discussed the proposals in detail. Jonathan Tazzard, assistant director of property, assets, and development, explained that the concept was influenced by similar venues in Swansea, Cardiff, and Derby, noting that such projects arent necessarily that successful.

Tazzard emphasized that the arena could draw visitors from beyond Essex. It gives people a reason to come to Basildon. We chose 3,500 seats after consulting with experts, as it suits acts with regional appeal, he said. He added that the arena would form part of a broader town centre strategy focused on leisure and cultural offerings, noting that the Towngate Theatre currently provides limited options.

In October, the council approved the first stage of the Westgate Shopping Park redevelopment, which includes a new seven-storey hotel with 95 rooms and a rooftop bar, along with 97 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Jessica Power, councillor for regeneration, jobs, and skills, stated, Town centres have evolved and are no longer just shopping destinations. By focusing on leisure and cultural attractions, we aim to increase footfall, which could support retailers and enhance Basildon as a destination.

Reform leader Sam Journet previously criticized the arena project as reckless and indulgent, while Conservatives have called for event ticket prices to remain affordable.
