Indonesian rescue teams are actively searching for around 400 individuals feared to be trapped following massive landslides triggered by heavy rains and cyclonic flooding almost a week ago. Authorities have confirmed that at least 440 people have died on the island of Sumatra.
Efforts to deliver emergency supplies by both land and sea are ongoing, but several areas remain inaccessible. Local officials reported that some residents have resorted to taking food and water due to the delays in aid.
This month, severe storms have caused widespread destruction in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, resulting in over 900 deaths and affecting millions of people.
The tropical storm Senyar brought severe flooding and landslides to Indonesia, destroying homes and submerging thousands of buildings. The National Disaster Management Agency reported that people are missing in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
"Two cities need immediate attention as they are cut off: Central Tapanuli and Sibolga," said Suharyanto, the head of the agency, according to the BBC. Aid ships are expected to reach Sibolga on Monday. Malaysia is also sending assistance to Aceh, one of the worst-hit provinces.
In Sungai Nyalo village, approximately 60 miles from Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, floodwaters had mostly receded by Sunday, leaving homes, vehicles, and crops buried under thick mud. Officials have not yet begun clearing the debris, and outside aid has not reached the village.
In addition to the 440 confirmed deaths, at least 400 people are still reported missing as a result of the flooding and landslides.
