KABUL, Afghanistan Afghanistan on Friday expressed "profound sorrow" and strongly condemned a cross-border strike into Tajikistan that resulted in the deaths of three Chinese workers and left another injured.
Deputy spokesman for the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, stated that initial investigations suggest "this event involves actors aiming to generate disorder, instability, and distrust among neighboring countries." He emphasized that Afghanistan "is committed to full cooperation with Tajikistan, including sharing information, providing technical support, and conducting joint assessments to determine the root causes of the attack."
Tajikistans Foreign Ministry reported that the assault occurred the previous night, launched from Afghan territory using a drone armed with grenades and firearms. The ministry criticized ongoing disruptions, noting that "despite Tajikistan's persistent efforts to maintain security and foster peace along the border, criminal activities originating from Afghan territory continue." Authorities urged Afghanistan to ensure stability in the border region.
The Chinese Embassy in Tajikistan advised its citizens to "avoid investing or working near the Tajik-Afghan border" and instructed those already present to "leave the area immediately."
Relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan have been strained, especially following the Taliban's 2021 takeover, after which Tajikistan severed formal ties. However, there have been recent signs of improved relations, including the reopening of border markets in 2023 and a Tajik delegation visiting Kabul earlier this month.
