In a frightening incident on December 1, a 72-year-old woman was seriously hurt after an encounter with geese at City Lake Park in Royse City, Texas. Lydia West, who often visited the park to feed ducks, sustained multiple pelvic fractures and internal bleeding.
According to her son, David West, the attack occurred while she was feeding ducks when several large geese aggressively approached. She was feeding the little ducks, and the geese rushed her and attacked the food, causing her to fall, he explained. She was stuck on the ground, unable to move.
Park visitors witnessed the incident and intervened, fending off the geese and calling emergency services. Lydia was subsequently taken to a nearby trauma center for treatment, and her recovery will involve extensive physical therapy.
David highlighted his mothers small stature and existing health issues, emphasizing the challenging road ahead as she works to regain mobility. He also hopes the episode will serve as a cautionary tale for others interacting with wildlife in public areas.
City Lake Park officials mentioned that they are considering adding signage to help visitors understand how to safely coexist with wildlife. It was shocking that the geese could become so territorial and cause such harm, David said, underlining the need for public awareness, particularly among senior citizens.
