Grandmother Contributes to Kids' Education Costs, but Is Criticized for 'Interfering'

A mother of two accepted her grandmothers offer to help cover her childrens school fees, only to discover that the grandmother had been directly contacting the schools to request financial statements and make decisions on behalf of the family. The situation has left the mother grappling with how to enforce boundaries while still accepting financial support.

Family dynamics often balance delicately between love and control, and financial generosity can sometimes blur those lines. One Reddit user shared her experience with a grandmother whose well-intentioned assistance became intrusive, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining personal boundaries with close relatives.

The post began with a straightforward description: I (30sF) need third party opinions about my grandma that keeps interfering in my personal business. My grandma offered and is paying a part of both my kids' school fees (4 and 1 year old). While her grandmothers help initially seemed like a kind gesture, it quickly overstepped boundaries.

At two different times she emailed the schools directly, requesting financial statements and making decisions for us, the mother explained. Despite being asked not to, the grandmother continued to act as though she were in charge of her grandchildrens education.

To address the issue, the mother tried a calm approach: If she wants to pay, she should please not contact the schools. We will handle the communication, and she can just send the proof of payment to me, and I will forward it. If she doesnt want to do this, we would prefer that she doesnt pay. The compromise was meant to allow her grandmother to help while maintaining the familys privacy and authority.

However, the grandmother ignored these requests and contacted the school again the following day. I feel like Im going crazy. Am I wrong for wanting her to respect my boundaries and for getting angry at her overriding me every time? the mother wrote, reflecting the frustration many feel when asserting limits with well-meaning relatives.

Responses from the Reddit community were divided. Some suggested instructing the school not to respond to the grandmother, while others emphasized that the mother was justified in maintaining direct control over school communications. If the grandmother is the one paying the bill, she SHOULD have access to invoices and receipts, one commenter noted. In her position, Id want to see the bills myself to know exactly what is due rather than relying on someone elses word.

The story underscores that accepting financial help does not require giving up personal decision-making or privacy, and that mutual respect is essential in family relationships.
