Federal border agents start immigration crackdown in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS Federal authorities began a targeted immigration enforcement operation in New Orleans on Wednesday, focusing on apprehending immigrants with violent criminal records. According to a Homeland Security official, the initiative mirrors similar actions carried out in other U.S. cities during the previous administration.

The operation specifically aims to detain individuals who had been released after arrests for offenses including home invasion, armed robbery, and sexual assault, stated Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. The official did not disclose the number of agents involved in the operation.

Louisiana has been preparing for this enforcement effort for several weeks, with Republican Governor Jeff Landry expressing support. Sanctuary policies put communities at risk by allowing illegal criminal aliens to remain free, forcing DHS officers to take dangerous actions to remove individuals who should not have been released, McLaughlin remarked.

Previous immigration enforcement actions under the Trump administration took place in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Governor Landry, an ally of former President Trump, has aligned state policies with the federal enforcement strategy.
