Source: Mets sign former Yankees closer and 2-time All-Star Devin Williams to a 3-year contract

The New York Mets have secured a three-year contract with former Yankees closer and two-time All-Star Devin Williams, according to Yahoo Sports' Russell Dorsey. Initial reports came from The Athletic and ESPN.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that the deal guarantees Williams over $50 million. The 30-year-old reliever made a name for himself during six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he compiled a 1.83 ERA, 375 strikeouts, and 112 walks over 235 2/3 innings. Williams also recorded 68 saves as Milwaukees closer and was selected for two All-Star games.

Williams joined the Yankees last offseason in a major trade that sent pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr., infield prospect Caleb Durbin, and cash to Milwaukee. However, after a challenging season in New York, he moves to the Mets, the Yankees crosstown rivals.

Williams faced difficulties early with the Yankees, losing his closer role after just 10 games. He rebounded over the summer, finishing with 18 saves in 62 innings but posted a career-high 4.79 ERA and 1.129 WHIP. He appeared in 67 regular-season games, closing 29 of them.

The reliever ended the season strongly, allowing no runs in 22 of his last 23 outings and pitching four scoreless innings in the postseason. The Mets are hoping to see that peak performance in Queens.

The Mets are signing Williams while veteran closer Edwin Daz is entering free agency. Although a reunion with the Mets is possible for Daz, he is expected to secure a high-value contract. Williams ranks as Yahoo Sports' No. 27 free agent this winter, while Daz is No. 11.
