J.J. McCarthy Criticized for 'Immature' Conduct During Vikings QB Dispute

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is under scrutiny from fans after recent activity on social media. McCarthy will not participate in the Vikings upcoming game this Sunday due to a concussion. His previous outing against the Green Bay Packers saw him record only 87 passing yards along with two interceptions. This season, he has completed 54.1% of his passes, totaling 929 yards with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

With McCarthy sidelined in concussion protocol, the Vikings will turn to undrafted rookie Max Brosmer as the starting quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks. Coaches and teammates have expressed confidence in Brosmers abilities. "I think there's confidence in Max, and like I said, I'm excited to see him as a guy that I've been watching behind the scenes do a lot of work and continue to just make it about the stuff that's important," said Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Earlier this week, a TikTok posted by a fan featured an analyst remarking, "I'm telling you if Max Brosmer gets the start, we're looking at a Brock Purdy situation." McCarthy then reposted the video with the comment, "Let's go Max," which drew criticism from fans who viewed the gesture as immature, given his struggles this season.

"Either JJ McCarthy and Max Brosmer are homies or its motivation but either way, hes being goofy as hell," one fan commented. Another added, "JJM has some growing up to do. Im not expecting great things in Maxs first start against a top NFL defense, but I am expecting more maturity."

Social media users also noted McCarthys recent posts, questioning his focus after seeing multiple reposts featuring former Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.

Questions about McCarthy's future with the team are emerging. On the Hoge & Jahns podcast, Dianna Russini of The Athletic speculated on whether McCarthy will remain the Vikings starting quarterback in 2026. ESPNs Jeremy Fowler suggested the team could target Daniel Jones in free agency if he doesnt secure a long-term contract with the Indianapolis Colts. It appears the Vikings will explore quarterback competition during the offseason.
