James Cook's Encouragement Boosts Bills' Offensive Line Against Steelers
The Buffalo Bills entered Week 13 without their usual starting offensive tackles. Dion Dawkins was sidelined with a concussion, and Spencer Brown was recovering from a shoulder injury. Both injuries occurred in the previous week's matchup against the Houston Texans, where quarterback Josh Allen was sacked eight times, a career-high.
Facing a formidable Pittsburgh Steelers defense, featuring T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig, many expected Allen to face immense pressure once again. However, backups Alec Anderson and Ryan Van Demark stepped up, allowing zero sacks as Buffalo secured a commanding 26-7 victory.
The Bills also dominated on the ground, rushing for a total of 249 yards, setting a new record for Acrisure Stadium. Running back James Cook accounted for 144 of those yards. After the game, Cook shared that he had reached out to the backup offensive linemen earlier in the day to motivate them.
"James Cook said he sent a message to Alec Anderson and Ryan Van Demark this morning, expressing his trust and belief in them and saying, 'lets go get a win,'" reported Sal Capaccio. "They replied, 'I love you, brother, lets go.'"
With this win, the Bills improved to 8-4 and will return home to face the Cincinnati Bengals, led by quarterback Joe Burrow. The Bengals, who recently defeated the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving, hold a 4-8 record and are aiming to win out while relying on external results to make the playoffs.
