UPDATE: Tosh Lupoi, Oregon Ducks Defensive Coordinator, to take on new role at Cal Golden Bears

BREAKING: Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi is set to leave Eugene after the 2025 season to become the next head coach of the California Golden Bears. According to a report first released by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, the agreement had been developing for several weeks and was finalized on Tuesday.

This announcement follows shortly after Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein accepted the head coaching role at Kentucky. Stein intends to remain with the Ducks through the College Football Playoff, and Lupoi is expected to do the same for the defense.

Lupoi was among Dan Lannings earliest hires at Oregon and has steadily elevated the programs defensive performance. This season, the Ducks rank eighth nationally in scoring defense at 15.0 points per game and second in total defense, allowing just 252.3 yards per contest.

At California, Lupoi will inherit a rebuilding project after the school moved on from long-time head coach Justin Wilcox earlier in the year. The Golden Bears concluded the season with a 75 record, securing bowl eligibility. One of Lupois first priorities will be retaining key playerssuch as standout freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutelebefore turning to the transfer portal in early January to begin assembling his 2026 roster.

With Lupoi preparing to take charge in Berkeley, Oregon now begins its search for a new defensive coordinator. Early expectations suggest that co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Chris Hampton could be the leading candidate for promotion.
