President Trump calls for renaming American football: 'We need a new name for the NFL'

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw in Washington, President Donald Trump remarked that the sport known globally as football should carry the same name in the United States, urging that the NFL consider adopting a different title for its game.

Speaking on stage at the Kennedy Center alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Mexicos president Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadas prime minister Mark Carney, Trump argued that the American terminology creates needless confusion.

He noted that while the U.S. typically avoids calling soccer football because of the existing association with the NFL, the term would be more fitting for the worlds most widely played sport. Trump stated that theres no question soccer represents the true essence of football, adding that the NFL should adopt an alternative name since it doesnt really make sense when considered logically.

Following his comments, the three national leaders participated in the ceremonial selection of their teams groups. The United States was placed in Group D, Canada in Group B, and Mexico in Group A. Mexico will also host the tournaments opening match on June 11 in Mexico City.

Earlier in the event, Infantino presented Trump with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize, emphasizing their long-standing friendship. The award, first announced in November, was bestowed despite not having received formal approval from the FIFA Council.
