Despite common sayings like "your record defines you," numbers don't always tell the full story. For the Dallas Cowboys, holding a 6-5-1 record as they head into Ford Field to face the 7-5 Detroit Lions, the stats are far from the full pictureat least according to Brian Schottenheimer.
After last season's dominant 15-2 campaign, the Lions have struggled recently, including a sweep at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. On paper, Detroit might seem less intimidating than last year. However, Schottenheimer refuses to buy into that narrative. He emphasizes that even a seemingly wounded Lions team can still deliver significant challenges.
"I'm not falling for the bait, Schottenheimer told 105.3 The Fan. I've seen Jahmyr Gibbs explode for 70-yard plays in an instant, and Hutchinson can burst around the edges. Records dont tell the whole story."
Just a few weeks ago, the Cowboys were struggling at 3-5-1, with playoff hopes distant. But in a short span, Dallas has turned perceptions around, with some national commentators now labeling them a formidable postseason contender. Schottenheimer believes the Lions retain similar potential to surprise opponents, regardless of their recent stumbles.
"This is a really strong team," he added. "Were better than a 6-5-1 team, and theyre better than a 7-5 team. Those are just standings at this moment. I dont dwell on that, unlike some others."
The Cowboys approach Thursday night with caution and respect for Detroit's capabilities. NFL unpredictability is ever-presentone week, a team seems unstoppable; the next, it can be caught off guard. For Dallas, acknowledging the Lions' lingering power is crucial, even if Detroit isnt at peak performance.
