The United Kingdoms recently formed left-wing party, Your Party, co-founded by former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, is facing internal conflict among its leaders. On Saturday, co-founder Zarah Sultana announced she would skip the first day of the partys inaugural two-day conference due to a dispute over attendee eligibility.
Following Labours decisive victory in the 2024 general election, Corbyn, along with independents Shockat Adam, Adnan Hussain, Ayoub Khan, and Iqbal Mohamed, established the Independent Alliance. The group emphasized a pro-Palestine stance amid Israels conflict in Gaza. Corbyn, 76, had resigned as Labour leader in 2019 after multiple electoral defeats and longstanding accusations of anti-Semitism, which he described as politically exaggerated.
After leaving Labour in 2024, Corbyn partnered with 32-year-old Sultana, also an ex-Labour MP, to form a new socialist party with other members of the Independent Alliance. Their stated goal was to offer a credible left-wing alternative to Labour, emphasizing social justice and community roots. The system is rigged when the government says there is no money for the poor, but billions for war, the pair said upon announcing the party.
The partys launch event, held in Liverpool, featured speeches emphasizing unity and concluded with attendees singing the Italian antifascist song Bella Ciao. Sultanas absence on the first day stemmed from her objection to the exclusion of some supporters, allegedly linked to the far-left Socialist Workers Party. She expressed disappointment that members who had traveled and spent money to attend were expelled.
An unnamed party spokesperson defended the exclusions, stating they were in line with membership rules. Sultana attended the second day of the conference, apologizing for initial problems but criticizing what she called undemocratic actions, including expulsions and censorship.
Internal Disputes Over Party Management
Further tensions arose over finances. Senior party figures accused Sultana of withholding over 800,000 in donations temporarily held by a private company she controls. She maintained the funds were being properly managed and partially transferred to the party.
The leadership structure also became contentious. Sultana advocated for a collective leadership reflecting grassroots democracy, while Corbyn supported a single leader. A narrow vote ultimately favored a collective leadership model, overseen by a non-MP party member.
Reports suggest the partys challenges are largely due to a power struggle between Corbyn and Sultana. Pre-conference events organized by Sultana angered Corbyn supporters, leading to defections. MP Adnan Hussain left on November 14, citing a toxic environment dominated by infighting and factional disputes. A week later, MP Iqbal Mohamed also resigned, criticizing unsubstantiated accusations against party members but emphasizing his professional conduct throughout.
