Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno proposes to prohibit holding dual citizenship.

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno has introduced a proposal aimed at eliminating dual citizenship for Americans. The legislation would mandate that U.S. citizens hold citizenship exclusively in the United States.

Under current law, U.S. citizens are allowed to retain citizenship in another country as long as that nation permits it. Moreno, who immigrated from Colombia as a child and became a U.S. citizen at 18, renounced his Colombian citizenship upon reaching adulthood.

"Taking the oath of allegiance to the United States and only the United States was a profound honor," Moreno said. "Being an American is a privilege, and if you choose to be one, it must be fully embraced."

The U.S. State Department notes that individuals holding citizenship in more than one country are expected to adhere to the laws and obligations of both nations. Dual citizenship often simplifies travel and allows people to own property or conduct business abroad.

Morenos bill would provide dual citizens a one-year period to give up either their U.S. or foreign citizenship, citing concerns that the current system "can lead to conflicts of interest and divided loyalties." The impact of this proposal on national politics is uncertain, though it could have implications for figures such as the First Lady, who holds citizenship in both the U.S. and Slovenia.
