MAGA Senator Accidentally Targets Melania and Barron Trump

An Ohio Republican senator has inadvertently included former President Donald Trumps wife and son in a controversial initiative aimed at eliminating dual citizenship in the United States. Senator Bernie Moreno intends to introduce a bill that would require American citizens to declare sole allegiance to the U.S., effectively ending the practice of holding multiple nationalities.

Moreno, who was born in Colombia and later renounced his Colombian citizenship, spoke about his pride in becoming an American at the earliest opportunity. Taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States was one of the proudest moments of my life, he said. Being American is a privilege, and if you want to be one, it should be all or nothing. Dual citizenship should be abolished.

Under Morenos proposed legislation, Melania and Barron Trump could be directly affected, as both hold dual citizenship with Slovenia. Melania, born in Slovenia, is only the second U.S. First Lady born outside the country and the first naturalized citizen to hold the role. She became a U.S. citizen in 2006 through an EB-1 visa reserved for individuals with extraordinary achievements.

According to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mary Jordan, Melania has retained her Slovenian citizenship and also secured citizenship for her son Barron, who was not automatically entitled to it. Jordan noted that keeping Slovenian passports provides Barron with significant flexibility, including the ability to work, study, or establish businesses in Europe more easily. Its about giving him options, Jordan said.

Currently, Americans can legally hold dual citizenship without the need to choose allegiance, but Morenos proposed Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 would change this. The bill aims to address what Moreno calls conflicts of interest and divided loyalties by forcing dual citizens to choose a single nationality. Those who fail to comply within a year would lose their U.S. citizenship and be treated as foreign nationals under immigration law.

The enforcement of the bill would fall to the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, which would implement a system to identify dual citizens and ensure compliance with the new regulations.
