Legal fees of Trump may result in millions in expenses for Georgia taxpayers

Former President Donald Trump is aiming to reclaim substantial legal expenses from the state of Georgia after charges related to election interference were dropped last week. The case involved allegations that Trump attempted to manipulate the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

The legal proceedings unraveled gradually after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis faced accusations of ethical misconduct due to her connection with the lead prosecutor on the case. She was subsequently removed, and the new district attorney decided not to continue the prosecution.

Trumps Georgia defense lawyer, Steve Sadow, stated that they plan to file for reimbursement of attorney fees and related costs. He referenced Georgia law, GA Code 17-11-6, which permits defendants in state criminal cases to recover legal fees if the prosecution is dismissed due to the improper actions of a prosecutor.

No formal request has yet been submitted, but estimates suggest that the amount could be significant. Sadow indicated that Trumps legal costs alone might approach $5 million. Including fees for Trumps co-defendants, the total financial impact on Georgia taxpayers could reach $10 million.

Sadow emphasized that the funds would come from the existing Fulton County District Attorneys office budget, without requiring additional taxpayer money. He added, Its unfortunate that her budget will be so affected. But shes the one who brought the case, and shes the one who has to live with the outcome.
