The Isle of Man is gearing up for its annual 24-hour endurance walking event, where participants journey through all 17 parishes. The 2026 Parish Walk is scheduled for 20 June and welcomes walkers of all skill levels to complete either the full 85-mile (137 km) course or sections of it.
Each year, around 1,000 participants take part, with residents and visitors lining the route in towns and villages to cheer them on. Event organiser Raymond Cox noted that for many, signing up provides a motivating goal for the new year. Cox, who first finished the walk in 1994 and has been overseeing the event for 30 years, stated:
"As the new year approaches, people often reflect on personal challenges and aspirations. We are excited to see the community unite once again for this remarkable event."
The complete route begins at the National Sports Centre in Douglas, circles the entire island, and finishes back in the capital along the promenade. The Parish Walk has become a key highlight on the island's calendar, drawing participants and spectators alike.
The event has been held annually since 1960, with only a brief pause in 1965 and 1966. The idea originated in the late 19th century when John Cannell of Douglas proposed visiting all 17 parish churches on horseback. In 1852, he reportedly completed the 90-mile (145 km) route in under 15 hours.
Last year's winner, Dean Morgan, finished the course on foot in 15 hours, 33 minutes, and 18 seconds.
Gary Lamb from event sponsors Manx Telecom described the Parish Walk as "a highlight of the Manx summer", praising how it unites walkers, supporters, and the broader community. "Each year, the event demonstrates the island's remarkable spirit," he added.
Entrants have until 00:00 GMT on 20 May 2026 to secure their spot in next year's challenge.
