A new initiative aimed at supporting individuals whose mental well-being declines during the long, dark nights of winter has been launched by a charity based in Berkshire. Sport in Mind, an organization dedicated to improving mental health through physical activity, is spearheading the effort.
To kick off the "Soles of the Season" campaign, the charity placed sneakers and a decorated Christmas tree at the center of Reading FC's stadium. Sport in Mind reported that over half of the people they assist experience worsening mental health during the winter months.
The charity emphasized the importance of offering accessible and uplifting support during the colder, darker months. A survey of Sport in Mind participants revealed that 55% feel the darker evenings negatively affect their mental health, while 67% say shorter daylight hours reduce their motivation to stay active.
Chief Executive Neil Harris stated, "For some, Christmas is a wonderful time, but for many it brings anxiety. Loneliness and isolation can be strong, so it's vital to reach out and create connections."
The campaign also encourages workplaces to support the cause by setting up Christmas trees adorned with trainer laces and tags for personal messages. Participants are invited to decorate their trainers with festive touches such as tinsel, glitter, and ornaments.
Reading FC players, including Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, have shown their support. Speaking at the campaign launch, Ehibhatiomhan remarked, "We are fortunate to have a close-knit group of players we can talk to daily, but not everyone has that. It's crucial for people to have someone to speak with and for organizations like this to exist."
Since 2010, Sport in Mind has partnered with the NHS, helping more than 31,000 people facing mental health challenges through sport-based activities that boost mood and overall well-being.
