Sydney Sweeney Explains the Story Behind the Viral Shrek-Themed Thanksgiving

Sydney Sweeney recently revealed the inspiration behind her unique Shrek-themed Thanksgiving party during an interview. The Anyone But You actress described the event as both glamorous and playful, explaining how the idea came to life.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the New York City premiere of her latest film, The Housemaid, on December 2, Sweeney talked about hosting a festive Friendsgiving with a fun twist. I love gathering everyone together, and I wanted a Friendsgiving, she said. But I always need a theme.

She continued, I thought, Whats something that lets everyone show their fun, childlike side? Shrek immediately came to mind. Everyone loves it, and it just felt perfect. She invited her neighbors for a block-style celebration, adding, My friends and neighbors are amazing. They came dressed in full costumes, and it turned into such a joyful experience.

The actress shared snapshots from the party on Instagram on November 30. In the photos, Sweeney appeared as Dragon from the Shrek series, donning a red-scaled leotard, wings, a tail, gloves, and a horned headband. Guests joined in the theme, dressing as characters such as Shrek, Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad, and Donkey.

In addition to her festive activities, Sweeney is preparing for the release of The Housemaid, a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig. Based on Freida McFaddens 2022 bestseller, the film stars Sweeney alongside Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, and is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
