'Survivor 49': Jeff Probst Responds to Unanimous 'Revenge' Vote

[Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Survivor Season 49 Episode 11.]

In Survivor 49, idols are losing their influence. The driving force now is revenge. Episode 11 highlighted two contestants targeting a specific player. One aimed to eliminate their strongest rival, while the other sought payback for a recently eliminated ally. Only one openly declared revenge as their strategy; the other insisted they were simply playing their game.

Jeff Probst shared his thoughts on these strategies and the elimination outcome on the On Fire aftershow podcast. He described the ousted playerwho had auditioned several times and served as an alternate before finally joining the seasonas a legit threat to win.

Last week, Jawans elimination was a major setback for his top ally, Sage, who was visibly emotional during Episode 11s Tribal Council, where Jawan appeared for the first time as a jury member. Earlier in the episode, Sophie admitted to deceiving Sage about her vote but refused to apologize for protecting her game. Sage immediately set her sights on Sophie.

In this episode, Steven secured both a block-a-vote advantage and the immunity necklace. Rizo initially planned to target him next but shifted to collaborating with Steven to focus on Sophie. Sophie had been aligned with the majority on every vote so far, and her strength in challenges made her a prime target. Rizo nominated her, and the group agreed.

During Tribal Council, Kristina feigned a vote against Savannah to make Sophie feel secure, and Savannah played along. In the voting booth, Savannah cast her vote for Sophie, calling it sweet revenge after past conflicts. Ultimately, Sophie voted for Savannah, but the majority voted Sophie out. As the results became clear, Sage shared a triumphant look with Jawan on the jury, who cheered her on. Sophie was stunned by the blindside.

Probst noted that Sophie had applied for the show multiple times before Season 49. In casting notes, he remarked, She is even hungrier now. Sometimes that hunger, combined with a chip on your shoulder from past rejections, makes a contestant a serious threat. He added, Sophie was a legit threat to win. And when you have those qualities, you naturally become a target. Surviving the vote is part of the game; managing these dynamics is what makes it challenging.
