At first glance, you might think youre looking at Tom Fords 1995 Gucci collectionthe one Madonna made iconic with its jewel-toned silk shirts. But this is something entirely new: Demnas pre-fall 2026 Gucci lookbook, shared on social media earlier today. The imagery initially fooled many fashion enthusiasts into believing they were seeing archival photos.
Demna is known for these playful deceptions, yet his work is far deeper than mere trickery. He is a visionary designer and skilled image-maker who knows how a subtle reference, gesture, or photo can transform ordinary garments into striking, imaginative pieces.
Interestingly, Demna began his Gucci tenure not with a grand runway spectacle but with two lookbooks and a short film. His first unannounced online release for spring 2026, photographed by Catherine Opie, explored classic Gucci motifs. These initial projects seem like preludes to his full runway debut, scheduled for February in Milan, which will further bridge Guccis historical archives with contemporary design.
For the pre-fall collection, Demna photographed the lookbook himself, evoking the 1995 Gucci aesthetic with a singular spotlight against a dark turquoise backdrop. The opening ensemble, worn by Alex Consani, referenced Fords sleek, fitted suits, yet with even more body-conscious tailoringa clasped blazer and leggings-like trousers with side zippers. Elements reminiscent of Ford appeared in pencil skirts, button-downs, and streamlined leather outerwear. However, the collection was not simply a tribute; it was an imaginative study of Guccis evolution.
Demna incorporated nods to Alessandro Micheles era through Dionysus bags and flowing pussybow dresses, and traces of Frida Gianninis tenure via romantic scarf prints and flared mini dresses. He also drew inspiration from 70s Gucci designs. Even while reflecting on the past, Demnas vision for the present and future shines through: slim, precise jeans, wetsuit-inspired pieces, and black leather jackets, alongside dynamic model poses, all convey a sense of immediacy and style.
The pre-fall lookbook illustrates Demnas growing fascination with Guccis history and its place in pop culture. Each reference, from horsebits to archival motifs, is carefully examined and reimagined under his creative spotlight.
