More than fifteen years after Meghan McCain's appearance on HBOs Real Time with Bill Maher, she reveals that the experience still haunts her. The former co-host of The View discussed the incident during a recent episode of her Citizen McCain podcast, in a conversation with CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings.
The discussion touched on Dylan Douglas, the son of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, who recently debated on CNNs NewsNight with Abby Phillip. McCain reflected on her own television experience, calling it her one and only time on Real Time and admitting she felt completely out of her depth in political conversation.
Ill never do it again. I was genuinely traumatized, said McCain, referencing the on-air exchange with Paul Begala, former advisor to President Bill Clinton, who she felt made her look foolish. She recalled how the episode went mega viral at a time when online virality was rare, and how Begalas arguments left her overwhelmed.
McCain admitted that she cried afterward and that even today, she would feel uneasy around Begala. It was a disaster Im still a bit intimidated by him. If I were in a room with Paul, Id definitely be cautious, she said. She also noted the lesson she learned: preparation is essential for any television appearance.
During the 2009 broadcast, McCains claim that the Obama administration spent too much time blaming its predecessor prompted Begala to fire back with a historical comparison. The resulting exchange, including McCains self-deprecating comment about being just the blonde here, drew significant audience applause and highlighted her discomfort in the debate.
McCain brought up the story following Dylan Douglas CNN debate with Jennings, who reportedly dismantled the young actor. Reflecting on her own experience, McCain called herself the queen of nepo babies, noting that famous children often receive early television exposure. She believes Douglas was similarly placed in a challenging situation, comparing it to bringing a knife to a gunfight.
