Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson surprise fans with performance at a bar in NYC

NEW YORK In a scene that felt almost surreal, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson appeared at a New York City bar to perform Neil Diamond classics, thrilling fans with an unexpected live show. The surprise event took place on Monday evening at Old Mates, an Australian-themed pub in the Financial District, as a prelude to their upcoming musical film, Song Sung Blue, which follows a real-life Neil Diamond tribute band.

The duo kicked off their set shortly after 10 p.m., opening with "Forever in Blue Jeans" and "Crunchy Granola Suite." The audience erupted when they reached the finale with "Sweet Caroline," during which Jackman climbed onto the bar, encouraging the crowd with shouts of "Raise the roof!" and "One more time, here we go!" Hudson joined him on stage, holding a beer and adding her own charm to the performance.

The bar, filled to capacity, was buzzing with excitement as fans captured selfies and cheered throughout the show. Some attendees had hoped Hudson might perform "Tiny Dancer," reminiscent of her role in Almost Famous, but the set concluded with a celebratory gesture instead. Jackman rang a bell reserved for special guests, showering the bar in silver confetti, and even served a few beers to the delighted crowd. Hudson joined friends atop a booth, enjoying her drink as the festive atmosphere continued.

Earlier in the evening, both stars attended the 2025 Gotham Awards, where they were honored with the inaugural Gotham Musical Tribute. Celebrities including Chris Rock, Christian Slater, and Zoey Deutch later joined the impromptu bar event, adding to the star-studded ambiance.

Song Sung Blue is set to premiere in theaters on Christmas Day.
