Spoiler warning: this article contains details about the conclusion of the dramedy Jay Kelly, available now on Netflix.
In Noah Baumbachs latest film, Jay Kelly, George Clooney portrays an iconic film star named Jay Kelly, embarking on a reflective journey that culminates at an Italian film festival where he is honored with a lifetime achievement award. The closing scene features Jay shedding tears as he watches a tribute reel highlighting his career, including clips from early works like Combat Academy and Sunset Beat, as well as major hits such as ER and Syriana.
Speaking about the experience of playing a character who watches himself, Clooney described it as a multi-layered, almost surreal situation. Picture this: were at the Venice Film Festival, watching myself watch myself at a festival, he said. I didnt know the montage would include clips from my real films, so my reaction in the movie was completely genuinethe very first take.
Baumbach clarified that the montage had always been planned in the script, but intentionally kept from Clooney until the filming moment. I assembled the reel while shooting and chose not to show it to him beforehand. We wanted the reaction to be authentic, right there in the scene, the director explained with a laugh.
On screen, Jay Kellys emotional response reflects the characters newfound perspective on life and career. Off screen, it was equally moving for Clooney, as he confronted memories from his own journey in cinema. At 64, everything feels more emotional, Clooney commented. Watching a film makes me think of the time spent with directors and co-stars rather than just the movie itself.
Baumbach expressed gratitude for Clooneys openness during the filming: He allowed himself to be vulnerable and witness his life unfolding on camera, which is naturally an emotional experience, while still staying in character.
Fellow actor Billy Crudup, who appears in the festival scene, described the concept as extremely clever, noting the nostalgic impact of seeing familiar references throughout the reel. Crudup recalled a line from the film where a fan tells Jay, When I look at you, I see my whole life, emphasizing the resonance such a tribute can have for longtime moviegoers.
The finale of Jay Kelly thus offers both a moving reflection on an actors career and a poignant reminder of the passage of time in the life of George Clooney, with tears that were entirely real.
