Gene Simmons Blames Ace Frehley's Death on 'Poor Choices': 'You Get What You Deserve'

Gene Simmons, former bandmate of Ace Frehley, has expressed sorrow over the late guitarist's passing, pointing to his "poor choices" as a contributing factor. Simmons described attending Frehley's open-casket funeral as an emotionally difficult experience.

Their relationship reportedly faced tension around 2019 when Frehley publicly criticized Simmons online over remarks about his drinking and reliability.

Simmons Reflects on Frehley's Life and Death

The KISS co-founder spoke about Frehley's lifestyle following the guitarist's death on October 16 at 74. Simmons highlighted Frehley's substance abuse and refusal to take advice from those who cared about him, which, in his view, played a role in his fatal fall down the stairs that caused a brain injury.

"He refused guidance from people who cared about him including myself to change his habits," Simmons said. "Falling down stairs I'm not a doctor doesn't usually kill someone. There may have been other factors, and it breaks my heart. Sadly, you reap what you sow."

Autopsy Details and Funeral Memories

An autopsy by the Morris County medical examiner reported Frehley's death as a blunt head trauma from a fall, with blood work still under review.

Recalling the private funeral on October 22, Simmons became emotional. "It breaks my heart. Peter Criss, Paul Stanley, and I attended the funeral, open casket," he said.

Reflections on Missed Opportunities and Legacy

Simmons lamented that Frehley did not live to see the recognition he would have received at the Kennedy Center. He spoke about the pressures within the band that may have prevented intervention, suggesting personal interests sometimes outweighed concern for Frehley's wellbeing.

"You continue with the tour for selfish reasons the money, the fame while someone who could be like a brother is harming themselves with poor choices," Simmons stated.

Past Conflicts Between Simmons and Frehley

Frehley had criticized Simmons for commenting on his drinking and reliability, claiming it harmed his career despite being over a decade sober. Simmons earlier remarks reportedly fueled tension between the two.

Simmons on Supporting Artists Through Legislation

Aside from reflecting on Frehley, Simmons recently discussed his support for the American Music Fairness Act. Speaking at a White House event, he emphasized that artists whose work is played on the radio deserve fair compensation.

"If a musicians work is on the radio, they should be paid. This legislation ensures artists get their fair share from billions made by radio advertising," Simmons said.
