Explanation of Will Byers' Powers and How They Work in Season 5 of Stranger Things

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the first four episodes of "Stranger Things" season 5. If you havent watched them yet, proceed with caution.

At the conclusion of episode four in the final season of Netflixs "Stranger Things," Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) surprises everyone by revealing he has powers. Facing off against Vecna, also known as One or Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower), who had taken Will into the Upside Down at the start of the series, Will manages to turn the tide. His newly discovered abilities allow him to control and eliminate several Demogorgons threatening his friends, accompanied by a nosebleeda signature sign when Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) uses her powers.

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have confirmed that Wills powers were always planned. Ross explained that Wills abilities are distinct from Elevens, stating, "Its different in that he can channel Vecnas powers. They are connected but not identical. Hes essentially puppeteering powers from Vecna."

Matt Duffer elaborated that Will's initial use of his powers involves manipulating the "hive mind" that usually controls the Demogorgons and is linked to Vecna. Wills connection to this hive mind is proximity-dependent; he can only access it when close enough. This differentiates him from Eleven, whose powers existed independently of the Upside Down.

The origins of Will's powers trace back to his first encounter with the Upside Down in season 1. Matt Duffer revealed that in season 2, Will was already subconsciously connected to Vecna, able to perceive what Vecna saw, but did not fully realize how to harness this ability until season 5.

Wills powers also reflect his personal growth. Since season 4, it has been established that Will is exploring his sexual identity, including feelings for his best friend Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard). His first active use of powers occurs after a meaningful conversation with queer character Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), highlighting how self-acceptance fuels his strength. Ross Duffer commented that Will has often been more fearful than other characters, and embracing himself empowers him to access these abilities.

As for Vecna, he underestimates Will, seeing him as weak and inconsequentiala miscalculation that allows Will to fight back successfully. Matt Duffer hinted that whether Vecna will make the same mistake again is left for Volume 2.

Volume 2 of "Stranger Things" season 5 releases on Christmas Day with three additional episodes, and the series finale premieres on December 31.
