Delay in reopening of Key Theatre due to impact of Raac

The reopening of Key Theatre in Peterborough, which closed two years ago after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) was discovered, has been postponed once again. Renovations at the venue are now costing 2.2 million and include a new roof along with upgraded heating and cooling systems.

Landmark Theatres, which manages the theatre, explained that additional project adjustments were required following structural assessments, leading to the delay. The Studio theatre and Chalkboard caf remain open during this period, while the main auditorium is now scheduled to reopen in May next year.

Peterborough Performing Arts will continue delivering its BTEC performing arts program without interruption, according to Landmark Theatres.

Investigations revealed that the initially planned roof could not be safely supported by the existing structure, marking the second major delay for the theatre, owned by Peterborough City Council. Earlier this year, the panto production Jack and The Beanstalk had to be relocated to New Theatre in Broadway, also managed by Landmark, due to unexpected construction complications.

After Raac was discovered in 2023, a temporary roof costing 196,000 was installed, allowing the panto season to proceed that year. Pep Jepson, chief officer and creative director at Landmark Theatres, emphasized the importance of audiences, stating that the council's investment secures the theatre's future and ensures continued access to arts and culture in Peterborough for years to come.

Efforts are being made to contact ticket holders for performances between January and April to offer alternative dates or refunds. The local authority has previously indicated it would provide compensation for losses during the theatres closure, though the amount has not been disclosed.
