Jayson Tatum spoke candidly about his teammate Jaylen Brown being named the NBA Finals MVP during the Boston Celtics 2023-24 championship run. The duo played pivotal roles in leading Boston to its first title in their careers.
The Celtics dominated the regular season with 64 wins and excelled in the playoffs, finishing with a 16-3 postseason record. Their journey culminated in a five-game victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, securing Boston's 18th championship in franchise history.
Brown shined throughout the Finals, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Tatum shared his perspective on Brown receiving the Finals MVP during an appearance on the Morris Code Podcast with Marcus and Markieff Morris.
Even with him winning Finals MVP, I was just so thrilled that we won the championship. Honestly, there was no jealousy or frustration. I thought, Its just not my turn yet. I know my time will come, and Ill earn a Finals MVP eventually, it just means I need to win another championship, Tatum said. Larry Bird didnt get Finals MVP every time, and Isiah Thomas didnt either. Ill get mine; its only a matter of time.
Tatum emphasized his support for Brown, showing selflessness while acknowledging his own future opportunities. As he recovers from an Achilles injury sustained in the 2025 playoffs, he continues to watch Brown excel. Brown is off to an impressive start this season, averaging 29 points, 6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in 21 contests, shooting 49.9% from the field, 34.7% from three-point range, and 77.2% from the free-throw line.
Currently, the Celtics hold a 12-9 record, positioned sixth in the Eastern Conference, tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks, just behind the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat.
Boston is preparing for an upcoming road game against the Washington Wizards on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. ET, followed by a home matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. ET.
