One of the Los Angeles Clippers most notable former stars has voiced frustration over how the organization handled the abrupt departure of Chris Paul. Just days after the team released the veteran guard mid-road trip, Blake Griffin spoke on Prime Videos NBA pregame show, making it clear he supports his former teammate.
Griffin highlighted Pauls influence during their years together in Los Angeles, emphasizing the leadership and professionalism Paul brought to the franchise. He criticized the Clippers for their lack of transparency and respect toward Paul, especially as the 20-year NBA veteran enters what is expected to be his final season.
Griffin explained that Paul helped establish a winning culture when he joined a young Clippers core and taught them how to approach the game at a high level. He expressed disappointment that Pauls return to the team intended as a final chapter in L.A. ended without the opportunity for the point guard to finish on his own terms.
What troubled Griffin most, he said, was Pauls claim that he received no communication from head coach Tyronn Lue or team owner Steve Ballmer before the decision was made. Griffin noted that respect and how an organization treats its players are foundational, and he felt Paul was not treated properly in this situation.
Reports following the release indicated that Paul had experienced tension with team leadership, including weeks without speaking to Lue. The front office allegedly received information suggesting Paul had been critical of players, coaches, and executives, prompting a meeting with basketball operations president Lawrence Frank. Paul reportedly denied the accusations but apologized to teammates if anything he said had been misunderstood. A meeting he requested with Lue was reportedly declined.
The decision came as the Clippers were struggling significantly, holding a 5-16 record at the time. Paul was averaging career-low numbers and had been coming off the bench all season.
Paul stated that he is staying prepared while processing the situation and does not plan to retire until the seasons end. Despite his reduced production, teams across the league may still find value in his experience and leadership.
Meanwhile, the Clippers have drawn considerable criticism but recently snapped a five-game losing streak with a decisive win over the Atlanta Hawks.
