"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" stands as one of televisions most iconic and influential series. The show chronicles Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a young woman destined to fight supernatural evils, navigating both ordinary teenage life and extraordinary threats. Since its debut in 1997, it has inspired countless shows and stories, blending memorable characters with unforgettable moments. Yet behind the scenes, the making of Buffy held its own drama and surprises. Here are 18 little-known facts that reveal just how remarkable the series really was.
1. Sarah Michelle Gellar had a fear of cemeteries
Gellar revealed she was phobic about cemeteries and the idea of being "buried alive." To accommodate this, the production created a fake cemetery on set for filming.
2. Joss Whedon nearly quit over Willow and Tara
Whedon considered leaving the show when executives criticized the queer romance between Willow and Tara. Ultimately, he kept the storyline intact.
3. Season five finale almost ended the series
The episode "The Gift" was originally planned as Buffys final appearance, depicting her sacrifice for humanity. The show, however, was renewed for two more seasons.
4. Katie Holmes and Selma Blair were contenders for Buffy
Holmes declined the role to attend high school, and Blair auditioned but later starred in "Cruel Intentions" with Gellar.
5. Ryan Reynolds passed on Xander
Reynolds avoided the role because he didnt want to play a high school student right after finishing high school himself.
6. Gellar initially auditioned for Cordelia
The casting directors first considered Gellar for Cordelia Chase, while Charisma Carpenter auditioned for Buffy. Ultimately, Gellars star power made her the perfect Buffy.
7. The early production was low-budget
Filming was largely done in a warehouse and real schools, with limited sets and challenging conditions, including extreme heat. The Bronze club set was built outside the warehouse for realism.
8. Library scenes were dreaded
The cast found the library scenes repetitive and frustrating, especially after the school was "destroyed" in Season Three.
9. On-set pranks before romantic scenes
Gellar and David Boreanaz often played gross-prank games, such as eating tuna or pickles before love scenes, to make filming fun.
10. Eliza Dushkus family concerns
Dushku, from a Mormon background, refused nudity, and her grandmother reportedly complained about sexual content on set.
11. Gellar maintained Buffys wholesome image off-screen
She avoided partying publicly and refused to be photographed with alcohol to preserve Buffy's clean persona.
12. Nicholas Brendon limited his workouts
Producers asked Brendon to stop exercising too much to maintain Xanders nerdy image.
13. Season six was challenging for Gellar
The darker tone of Season Six made it difficult for Gellar to separate herself from Buffys struggles, requiring emotional support from the creators.
14. James Marsters auditioned with a Southern accent
The producers ultimately chose a British accent for Spike, which fit the character better.
15. Marsters was shaken by Spikes actions in "Crush"
The controversial assault scene in Season Six profoundly affected Marsters, who described it as the darkest professional moment of his life.
16. Allegations against Joss Whedon
Whedon faced accusations of creating a hostile work environment, including mistreatment and intimidation of cast members. Several actors spoke out, and Gellar expressed support for their statements.
17. Some cast learned of Gellars departure through magazines
Alyson Hannigan and Nicholas Brendon discovered that Gellar was leaving via an interview, rather than being informed personally.
18. Dolly Partons indirect involvement
Parton was technically an executive producer through her manager, Sandy Gallin. She supported the cast and crew and participated in the shows production.
