If you intend to fly within the U.S. after February 1, 2026, and do not possess a REAL ID, it is highly recommended to schedule a visit to your local DMV soon. For those unfamiliar, a REAL ID is a state-issued drivers license or identification card that meets federal security standards. Alternatively, a valid U.S. passport can serve the same purpose.
Starting May 2025, a REAL ID or another accepted form of identification will be required to board domestic flights. Travelers without one can still fly, but they will incur a fee that is significantly higher than previously planned.
The TSAs Modernized Alternative Identity Verification program, initially set to launch in November with an $18 non-refundable charge, has been postponed to February 1, 2026. The updated fee for this service is now $45 per traveler. This program assists passengers who do not have a REAL ID or equivalent identification.
Several forms of ID are accepted in place of a REAL ID, including a U.S. passport or passport card, a Department of Defense ID, permanent resident card, border crossing card, Veteran Health Identification Card, or photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation or Indian Tribe. Travelers with these IDs will not need to pay the additional fee.
The TSA reports that over 94% of passengers already use a REAL ID or an accepted alternative, meaning most travelers are prepared. However, those without proper identification should anticipate longer security wait times. The TSA Confirm.ID process is optional but mandatory for those lacking acceptable ID to board their flight.
This identity verification service, which costs $45 for travelers 18 and older, is designed to confirm your identity and prevent unauthorized individuals from boarding. The process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes but may take up to 30 minutes or longer in some cases. The fee covers a 10-day travel window, meaning a return trip within that period does not require an additional payment. Longer trips, however, may require the fee to be paid twice. Children under 18 are not required to present identification.
In summary, to avoid extra costs and delays, travelers are encouraged to obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or another approved form of ID before flying. Digital alternatives may also be an option for convenience.
