RSPCA issues warning after pony left abandoned on public footpath

Animal welfare groups are urging pet owners to seek assistance if they are struggling to care for their animals, following the discovery of a pony abandoned on a public walkway. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) reported that the pony was discovered trapped between two gates in Owston Ferry, North Lincolnshire, by a passerby on 27 November.

Olivia Farrar, an animal rescue officer with the RSPCA, commented: "These times are tough for many people, and caring for pets can be financially challenging, but abandoning an animal is never a solution."

The charity highlighted that reports of abandoned animals are expected to reach a six-year peak, with more cases anticipated during the winter months. The pony, named Niko by the charity, has undergone a veterinary examination and is now receiving proper care.

Ms Farrar added: "Niko was found in a very poor state extremely frightened, underweight, and with a matted and dirty coat. Encountering abandoned animals in such vulnerable conditions is always distressing."

Under the UK's Animal Welfare Act 2006, abandoning an animal is a criminal offense that can lead to fines and imprisonment.

The RSPCA confirmed that, up to the end of October, its emergency line had received 24,270 reports of abandoned animals, up from 19,727 during the same period in 2024.

"This year has been challenging for many animals, including horses and ponies," Ms Farrar noted. "With colder months approaching, the situation may become even more critical." She encouraged anyone with information about Niko's abandonment to contact the charity immediately.
