Ritz cracker producer Mondelz Global has initiated a recall of 70 cases of peanut butter sandwich crackers in eight states due to a mislabeling error that could trigger severe allergic reactions. The company announced on November 28 that it is recalling 20-count Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania.
The recalled products are labeled as peanut butter crackers, but inside the boxes, some may contain cheese crackers instead. This mix-up poses a significant risk for individuals with peanut allergies, as the cheese crackers do not contain peanuts but are incorrectly labeled, potentially leading to severe allergic reactions for those with peanut sensitivities.
In its announcement, Mondelz Global emphasized that all outer packaging of the affected cartons correctly lists the allergen advisory statement, noting that the product "contains peanuts." However, the internal packaging error could expose consumers to unexpected allergens.
This recall follows a similar issue in July, where the company recalled several carton sizes of peanut butter cracker sandwiches for the same mislabeling concern. The July recall included multiple packaging formats, such as 8-count, 20-count, and 40-count boxes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, as well as a 20-count variety pack of Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwiches. According to the company, the mislabeling was caused by defective packaging rolls from a supplier.
Despite these concerns, Mondelz Global confirmed that there have been no reports of illnesses or injuries associated with the recalled products in either the current or previous recalls. Only the peanut butter cracker sandwich cartons are involved in this recall, and Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches are not affected.
