'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2' Begins December with $56.5 Million Opening

Universal and Blumhouse's latest installment, Five Nights at Freddys 2, is energizing a typically slow weekend following Thanksgiving, earning $29.8 million on its first day across 3,412 theaters. This puts the horror game sequel on track for a $56.5 million opening weekend.

Although this figure falls short of the record-breaking $80 million debut of the original Five Nights at Freddys last October, it still secures the sequel as a box office hit and surpasses pre-release predictions of around $40 million. The success is largely driven by strong last-minute ticket sales from Gen Z audiences, who were the main supporters of Scott Cawthons first film adaptation.

However, fan reactions to FNAF 2 are slightly cooler than for its predecessor. While the original earned a notably high A- CinemaScore for a horror movie, the sequel received a B, aligning more closely with typical ratings in the genre.

The film is not expected to significantly increase its earnings beyond this weekend, which explains its release during the traditionally quiet post-Thanksgiving period. Attendance over Saturday and Sunday will reveal whether the slightly lower fan reception affects its momentum.
